The Strata City

THE STRATA CITY – AN ALTERNATIVE URBAN DESIGN PARADIGM

The urban habitat is claiming its place as the principal living environment, at present for 50% of humanity and more than 90% of world population toward the end of the century, tripling its present
numbers (!).
With ‘more of the same’ approach we will witness wider ‘urban fields’, collapsing infra-structures and unbridgeable conflicts between the built and the natural environments.
The emerging urban reality is in rising conflict with the prevailing urban design paradigm.
Long term ‘sustainability’ dictates dramatic urban densification, to unfamiliar historical precedents, mostly through utilization of building air-rights (thrusting up) and subterranean development, while exploring a different spatial design morphology and experimenting with elevated gardens and sky promenades.

It calls for the development of an alternative urban design Daradiam. a new urban desian approach. to be desianated as the (multi-layered) Strata City.
The design morphology of the Strata City will be characterized by hierarchical layered arrangement and distribution of the urban built mass, freeing and reserving the ground area for mostly public use,
its biotic and social-cultural infrastructures and the existing urban heritage, its worth-preserving historical fabric and monuments, and an extensive reliance on the concept of bridge avenues, for better
solution of transportation and accessibility.
Cite Du Peripherique – The Peripherique City of Paris (2002-3) Application of the multi-layer (‘Strata City) concept, over and between the ~35,5km long Peripherique Transportation complex
and the parallel accompanying ‘Boulevards of the Marshals’, to generate a viable and attractive high density, environmentally sustainable urban habitat. The suggested development is based on
a far-reaching exploitation of building air-rights, in the form of bridge avenues over the peripherique, supported on a periodic sequence of high-rise towers and wide use of underground spaces.
The project is supposed to provide a solution for 500.000 inhabitants, with all the required supporting services and infrastructures.
